At Mamobi Ladidi, Abubakar Issaka runs his creative and business entity Borla (Waste) Plast ‘BP Art’.
Unimpressed with plastic waste disposal efforts in the capital and bearing a creative mind which craves for creative outlets, Abubakar set out to collect used Beta Malt bottles, weaving them into respectacles that folks could throw their empty water bottles in for collection.
This helps beautify the city as well as help those who recycle the plastic bottles to have them at ‘Bakr’s workshop for easy collection and transportation.
And spectacularly Abubakar Issaka harvests the plastic covers of the bottles, wash them, sort them, slice them and then stitch them to form variety of items spanning face mask and decorative pieces ready to be hanged at airports, museums, hotels, galleries and what-have-you.
This creative force’s inventions have also forstered peace in Mamobi as junkies who formed the habit of entering homes stealing cooking wares, aluminum buckets and other items simply help themselves to items in Abubakar’s over 50 waste bins in the community.
Way Forward:
- Access funding to get a pickup vehicle to collect empty bottles disposed off in the waste bins.
- Get support from Tourism Ministry as well as the Environmental and Green Transition Ministries to churn out more creative pieces in the national colours.
