The Chief Engineer of the Zaporozhskaya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), Alexander Yakovlev, was killed this afternoon in a drone strike.
According to Rosatom, a drone operated by the Ukrainian Armed Forces struck a Toyota Camry service vehicle belonging to the plant at the boundary between the ZNPP industrial site and the city of Enerhodar.
The vehicle’s driver, Dmitry Filippov, was also killed in the attack. Yakovlev had devoted his entire career to the nuclear power industry.
“Rosatom State Corporation mourns this irreparable loss. We extend our deepest condolences to the families, loved ones, and friends of those who were killed,” commented Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev.
Thirteen people have been killed and 48 injured in the Enerhodar area over the past two and a half months, adding to concerns about the risk of a major nuclear incident affecting the wider region, including Russia, Ukraine, and Europe, Rosatom said.
Rosatom calls on the international community to recognise the seriousness of the situation and urges the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to provide a swift and clear assessment of the incident.
