Sadio Mané ’s hopes of playing at the Qatar 2022 World Cup have been effectively ruled out thanks to a leg injury he sustained during Bayern Munich’s game against Werder Bremen on Nov. 8.
Despite trouncing the Bremen lads by 6-1, there was little joy in Bavaria as Mané limped off the field. It turned out the Senegalese talisman had injured his right fibula in the win over Bremen and will miss Saturday’s game against Schalke.
Following a second MRI scan, surgery was decided upon where a ruptured tendon was reattached to the head of his right fibula.
“Sadio Mané underwent successful surgery in Innsbruck on Thursday evening. He will therefore no longer be available to play for Senegal at the World Cup. All the best for your recovery, Sadio! ,” a statement from Bayern read.

The Senegalese Football Association will rue the missed opportunity for the two-time African Footballer of the Year to lead the Lions of Teranga to a semi-final berth, one better than their quarter-final appearance at the 2002 mundial.
Sadio Mané is the Lions’ highest goal scorer with 34 goals. He helped the Lions lift their first AFCON cup after two attempts in finals. He also scored the winning penalty to seal the World Cup qualification for Senegal.
Mané’s absence dents Senegal and Africa’s chances at the World Cup in Qatar according to some African football fans. It is a great loss for Aliou Cissé’s side that now has a mountain to climb in Group A as they face the Netherlands in the opening game on Monday.
He was included in the squad list sent to FIFA in hopes of making a quick recovery to join the campaign even if he missed the initial games till the second scan scuppered any such hopes.
Questions have arisen as to why Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann didn’t substitute and preserve Mané in a game they already had under wraps.
A Senegal official submitted: “It is terrible that we shall be without him at the biggest stage in world football. He has been a great leader in the team and we shall miss him.”
“This is now extra motivation for the team to fight for him,” he added.
