Cody Gakpo is having a hell of a World Cup in Qatar where he’s scored three goals in three games.
The Dutch booked their entry into the Round of 16 when they defeated host nation Qatar by two unanswered goals as the Qataris registered three losses on the bounce – a first for a World Cup nation.
Netherlands take top spot in Group A with seven points, while Senegal, after their 2-1 win over Ecuador, finish runners-up with six points.
The Dutch have Cody Gakpo to thank at the Al Bayt Stadium as his fine form continued when his strike gave the Orange lads an early lead and his third goal of the tournament. Frenkie de Jong added another in the second half. With the Iranians put to the sword by the Americans 0-1, Gakpo’s Dutch crew have a date with the US in the 16th round.
Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal believes Cody Gakpo will “evolve much further.” It’s easy to why he is garnering keen attention. The 23-year-old is only the second Dutch player to score in his first two FIFA World Cup appearances after Memphis Depay in 2014.
His header in a 2-0 win over Senegal and fine left-footed strike in a draw with Ecuador have all caught the eye.
On the club side, he already has 13 goals and 17 assists for PSV Eindhoven in all competitions this season.
