Ghana’s Black Stars registered their first win of the FIFA World Cup 2022, defeating South Korea’s Taegeuk Warriors to retain hopes of advancing to the Round of 16.
The 3-2 win at the Education City Stadium on Monday is the Black Stars’ first World Cup win since the 2010 South Africa mundial.
Although Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu had opened the scoring in the 23rd minute for the Stars, it had to take Ajax star Kudus Mohammed to give Ghana a second and ultimately secure a win with a late goal to wrap up the game at 3-2.
In some pleasant news, Mohammed Kudus emerged as the first Black Stars player to score two goals in a single FIFA World Cup game for Ghana.
The Korean’s had dominated the opening exchanges but failed to make use of any of their seven corners.
Kudus Mohammed struck again in the 34th minute as Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew combined with left fullback Gideon Mensah and midfielder Salis Abdul Samed to locate him for a sweet header. For his third he calmly slotted in the ball.
For one whose inclusion to the Black Stars generated some curiosity over persistent chase by the Football Association, it is heartwarming to see just how quickly he’s fitted into this squad becoming the fulcrum around which the team poses the most goal scoring threat.
Little wonder then he won the Man of the Match plaque in the South Korea game; a sign of things to come.
Rapper M.anifest puts it aptly when he submits “Changing of the guard. Kudus is the center of our team now. The boys try waa. New astronauts 🇬🇭⭐️”
